A new list of countries where the internet is being suppressed and on-line censorship is increasing has been compiled by Reporters Without Borders.

It is a list of the usual suspects (http://www.rsf.org/) but the inclusion of China, Saudi Arabia and Egypt should sound alarm bells given current government policy. The rapid development of China is having a global economic and social impact and is being embraced by the UK, while both Saudi Arabia and Egypt remain close partners in the “war on terror”.

What is interesting is that among those now removed from the list is Libya, which has been working hard to rehabilitate itself in recent years although there remains a large and understandable degree of scepticism among many about the regime’s over-riding motives.
