The ignominious downfall of Lord Browne from head of BP is being dissected by the media and is likely to remain newsworthy for several more days.

There is the considered coverage, plus the more salacious.

The story raises all manner of questions, from the accountability of senior executives to the freedom of the media to investigate allegations of public interest.

But it also highlights another question – is the world of business one of the last bastions of homophobia?

Actually, this question can be further broken down to – is it time for The City to catch up with the rest of society in its attitude towards homosexuality?

John Browne has zealously guarded his private life and so he should.

But it would be interesting to discover whether he might have felt so compelled to resort to such measures if he had been involved in a heterosexual relationship.
