There are those who believe that the speed camera is the police’s best friend.

I doubt whether police driver David Mayes agrees, after he was fined £400 and banned from driving for six months after he was snapped giving a thumbs up as he drove past cameras in Sheffield.

The officer was on 999 calls but admitted driving without due care and attention.

He now faces misconduct charges from South Yorkshire Police, the force which saw its own Chief Constable Meredydd Hughes fined and disqualified from driving for speeding in North Wales last year.
