Ambitious plans to launch a Welsh language daily newspapers have been abandoned after the company behind the publication failed to secure sufficient funding.
Y Byd (The World) was originally due to be launched on March 1, St David’s Day, but after the Welsh assembly government offered just £200,000 a year in funding the decision was taken to abandon the project.
The newspaper was hoping to secure at least three times as much in funding and the company behind Y Byd claims that producing a credible Weksh language newspaper was impossible without the bigger grant. It has also criticised the assembly for failing to support the project, claiming it calls into question the body’s commitment to the Welsh language generally and Welsh media in particular.
As well as covering Welsh stories, Y Byd would also have included a mix of UK and international news.
