Perhaps I should file this one under Tales of Modern Life…?

Two police officers have been forced to resign after they took patrol cars on trips to the seaside whilst still on duty.

The pair and three others were nicknamed the “Seaside Five” by colleagues as their jaunts to Porthcawl and Barry Island became common knowledge. They even took mobile phone photographs of themselves enjoying their days out from the Blackwood police station.

The Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) said two other Gwent officers were fined and a fifth resigned ahead of the conduct hearing.

The day tripping PCs were only found out after the patrol car they used on one trip to Weston-super-Mare broke down.

All four officers at the IPCC hearing were charged with behaving in a way which was likely to bring discredit to the police service. Three were charged with being neither open nor truthful and one officer was charged with failing to treat a member of the public with courtesy and respect.
