The name Gren might mean very little outside of Wales and a few diehard rugby fans.

But he was, without doubt, one of the true unsung “stars” of the hey-day of Welsh rugby and has passed away.

While the likes of Edwards, John, Bennett, the Davieses, the Williamses et al were setting rugby pitches alight with their dazzling displays, Gren (or Grenfell Jones to give him his proper name) was capturing those heady days perfectly in print.

A cartoonist who immortalised the rugby fanaticism and other aspects of life in South Wales with aplomb, his work was a fixture The South Wales Echo for many years. His annual rugby calendar was also a regular on countless Christmas lists each year.

It is sad to hear of his death. But the beauty of such artists is that their work will always live on (http://gren-art.co.uk).
